About Us
Are you looking for an exciting sport with opportunities for exercising, socializing and competing, with optional fun-filled travel? Then dragon boat racing may be just the sport for you.
Dragon Boat racing is one of the fastest growing – and oldest – sports in the world. Originating in China 2,000 years ago, it is now popular throughout Asia, the Pacific Islands, Europe and North America. It’s an exciting sport with opportunities for competition, fitness, travel and socializing.
The Alameda DragonFlyers racing team was established in 2000 — and we have been growing ever since. With 60-70 members, we represent a diverse mix of ages and athletic abilities from around the Bay Area. We offer opportunities for novice, recreational and competitive paddlers in women’s, mixed and masters divisions. One of the most active, organized teams in the San Francisco Bay area, ADF trains year ‘round on the Alameda/Oakland estuary. We participate in local and West Coast races and travel to one or two races during the season. We have competed in Long Beach; San Diego; Portland; Venice, Italy; Dublin, Ireland and Victoria, Vancouver and Nanaimo, British Columbia. Our active recruitment program offers opportunities for novice, recreational and competitive paddlers in women’s, mixed and masters divisions. The Bay Area dragon boat racing season runs from March through November. Generally speaking, we practice Monday and Wednesday evenings during daylight savings; weekdays during winter off season and Saturday mornings year-round. We are located at 2531 Blanding Avenue (at Broadway) next to Nob Hill Foods in Alameda. |
